Note that in later versions of Office , the Feedback smiley face is under the File button, not at the top of the Ribbon. This is an optional tab. If you don't see this tab on your computer or have questions about the controls on the tab, use the link above. Most contextual tabs show up on the right side of the Ribbon. The Outlining tab will pop up before the Home tab! The Outlining tab has been unchanged since Word You deactivate the Outlining tab by clicking on "Close Outline View" or by changing to a different view.

See my page on Outlining in Microsoft Word for more. The next group, though, should be handled with caution. I advise not doing anything with the Master Document controls until you have read and thought about my page on the Master Document "Feature" in Word. If you insert a table and are in the table, you will see two additional tabs: Design and Layout.

Note the draw table and eraser commands have been moved from this tab to the Layout tab. Note: the Header Row checkbox in the Table Tools Design tab has nothing to do with whether or not the table's first row is repeated on subsequent pages.

That is controlled on the Table Tools Layout tab. The Table Tools encompassing tab has disappeared! The Table Design is now so designated and the Layout Tab is still there. As is often the case, the Document Info button simply gives you another spot to find a command.

A table is created and the Table Tools tabs become available even though not activated. An options menu is available or some of the header and footer options. The version appears to have dropped a number of options to allow for the WordArt and Text groups.

In reality, the effects have been moved to the Shape Effects drop-down. It brings up the following tab:. The tab is virtually unchanged in later versions but you can only get to it using a QAT button or keyboard shortcut.

When this tab is showing, you can type and do basic editing in the document. Again, backstage contains information about the document and Word. It gives you access to controls for the document like Save, Send and Print; it gives you access to control over Word options that let you change how Word works in all documents. Again, in any version of Word you can return to the document view and other ribbon tabs by pressing the Esc button on your keyboard.

The Backstage could easily be the subject of a separate page and perhaps some day it will be. Here are just some pictures.

But, in the fall of , this initial view using the backstage Info tab changed to using the new backstage Home tab. See below. In the fall of , backstage's initial view changed to the backstage Home tab from the Info tab:.

You may be in Reading View. Word will be maximized and there also will be no Status Bar at the bottom. Word is maximized, filling your screen. If you are showing the Navigation Pane or other Panes, they will be shown. The Ruler may be shown. This is temporary. The Ribbon is set to Auto-Hide. Change the Auto-Hide setting using the control at the top-right of the window.

The control is a small rectangle with an up-pointing arrow. Choose to either display the Ribbon or the Ribbon and Commands. Word does not have to be maximized, it can be in a regular window not Full-Screen. The ToggleToolbars legacy command has been invoked.

If you close and reopen the document, this will go away. But sometimes it disappears, and the top of your Word document looks like this:. Getting that ribbon back is easy.

I told you it was easy! If you would prefer to click on something with your mouse, look in the top right corner of your Word document window.

So if you click that little icon, it makes the Word ribbon disappear, and the icon is then pointing downward. So you know if your ribbon is gone, you can click on the down-pointing icon to make the ribbon come back on display. In fact, if you want to play a little joke on someone, wait until they are away from their computer, then go over and make their ribbon disappear. A little harmless fun in the office! Get updates when new comments are added. Subscribe to the comments RSS Feed. My Word ribbon disappeared months ago, and I never knew why.

To know this for sure you will have to select a tab such as Home, and there the toolbar may reappear temporarily. This button may be a down arrow in older versions of Microsoft Word, It can also be a thumbtack like the one we put in the image above.

In any case, it should be located in the upper right corner, whatever icon it has. Once you find this pin and click it, you are going to fix the entire toolbar that had appeared at that time.

Everything will stay correctly fixed until you unlock again with the thumbtack. Before we go we want to finish the article with why this bar disappears, so that you take everything into account and it never happens again. In this way you will not have to resort to Google or Mobile Forum as you are doing now. Keep in mind the points that we are going to add below because they are part of the guide in which you learned how to recover the Word toolbar.

From our experience the toolbar disappears in Word because of the following:. In case none of this works for you and the bar never appears, you can always go to Microsoft Office and Word support if your version is paid.

Or if it is not, look for alternatives to Word that are more comfortable for you as a word processor. Just one of them and widely used on the Internet is Open Office, a free word processor of a suite that also includes alternative versions to Excel called Numbers or Microsoft Power Point, such as Draw.

It is not a bad option and you can take it into account. We hope this article has been helpful and that you already know why the toolbar disappears in Word but above all, that now you know how to make it reappear and leave it fixed.

If you have any questions or suggestions you can leave it in the comment box. See you in the next Mobile Forum article. The content of the article adheres to our principles of editorial ethics.

The truth is that sometimes it can be due to an error, a change of screen and its. First off, even though many users call it a toolbar, that's not the actual name for it. It's called the “ribbon”. At least that's how it's. If you are using Microsoft Word or a later version and if you have created custom toolbars in earlier versions of Microsoft Word, those toolbars can be.
